abstract = "This paper aims to compare two methodologies for generating the
water balance of the soil for soybean crop during the crop-year
2011-2012 with the use of remotely sensed data form the ECMWF, for
climatological data. The study was conducted in the west region of
Parana State, counting on 65 virtual station from ECMWF, one at
each 25 km for climatological data. Parana state is responsible
for almost 20% of the Brazilian soybean production and the western
region of the state is the most responsible for crop production in
Parana. This work describes both methodologies for generating the
water balance of the soil, one method used were FAOs method for
water balance of the soil according the guidelines nº 56. The
other method is the one proposed by Thornwaite and Mather. Both
methods were capable of identifying water stress for soybean crop
several dekads, from the second dekad of December until the second
dekad of February, but FAOs method tend to penalize more hardly
than the method presented by Thorntwaite and Mather. This
diversity of values might be explained by the calculation methods
that are particular of each specific method, because FAOs method
dont take in account the specific water storage capabilities of
the soil, at the same level that Thornwaite and Mather does.",
